Inaugural lecture series: Professor Sundari Anitha

The University of Lincoln’s Institute for Advanced Studies is delighted to invite you to Professor Sundari Anitha’s Inaugural Lecture.

Women Striking Back: Struggles and Strategies against Violence and Exploitation

Over recent years, the issue of violence against women and girls has come to the centre of public attention and outrage in a manner that was unimaginable just a decade ago. Women’s experiences of exploitation and discrimination in the workplace is both connected to and exacerbated by inequalities within the home and in public spaces.

However, not all women experience disadvantages in the same way. Utilising the sociological concept of intersectionality, Anitha’s lecture takes us on a journey through her research across two areas—on domestic violence and gender-based violence in university communities; and on South Asian women’s participation in the Grunwick and Gate Gourmet strikes. Anitha draws upon her research on the struggles for rights that women have waged at the individual and collective level, in relation to their domestic lives, education, public spaces and workplaces to reflect on the distance we have travelled and the challenges that lie ahead. This lecture also presents a personal story of the connections forged between research and activism, and of building bridges between academic knowledge and popular understanding and practice.
