The Lincoln Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) supports the curiosity that drives our research. Through funding opportunities and activities we help to shape and promote an effective and outward-looking research environment at Lincoln.

The LIAS encompasses all disciplines within the University, promotes creativity and interdisciplinarity, and seeks to extend the public reach of the University through dissemination activities and external collaborations. We are also part of a growing network of Institutes for Advanced Studies both nationally and internationally.

What we do

The primary aims of the LIAS are to build, enhance and internationalise the research environment at Lincoln and to showcase the research achievements of the University’s faculty. These aims are met through our five areas of activity:

Visiting International and Home Fellows Schemes
Santander Mobility Awards (From 2019)
Inaugural Professorial lectures
Research development activities
Vacation schools (from summer 2019)
We thus support Lincoln’s research community by providing both financial support and an environment for the exchange and development of creative ideas, and through initiatives that are of strategic importance to the University of Lincoln.

Our Schemes

The LIAS supports research activity across the university, by offering fellowship schemes to prestigious international visitors, travel schemes for academic colleagues, and through delivery of focused research development activities.

International visiting fellowships

This scheme enables research groups to attract to Lincoln distinguished, international researchers, including policy makers, representatives of the arts, business, government and industry. While the main aim of the scheme is to foster international research collaborations, it may be possible to host Fellows based in the UK if their visit would enhance strategically important research within the University of Lincoln.

Santander Mobility awards (From 2019)

Funding is available for University staff (including early career researchers) to develop or strengthen teaching or research partnerships with institutions in countries which are eligible under the University’s partnership agreement with Santander. Awards are on the order of £1k per applicant.

Inaugural Professorial lectures

The LIAS will host a new series of monthly Professorial Inaugural lectures, each lecture provides opportunity for academics to share and celebrate their research achievements and leadership with an audience of members of the University community and the general public.

Vacation Schools (From 2019)

Vacation Schools can host Lincoln-based PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as well as early career researchers drawn from a wider national or international pool. In all cases, they should be designed to enable attendees to gain new understanding of emerging fields of scholarly analysis in dialogue with a team of more senior researchers – including both Lincoln staff and external academics and experts. There will be an annual call for the Vacation School Scheme.
